Common Antagonistic Humanoids

The following is a list of the most common antagonistic humanoid races that exist in this campaign. It should be noted that my philosophy is that the large number of humanoid antagonists found in the various editions of the Monster Manual is too great for any one campaign, and that they should be pared down to a smaller number of possibly related humanoids; to that end I have generally defined an “orc group” and a “goblin group” and will only use one or the other. This campaign uses the “orc group” (hence the presence of half-orcs, which would not exist in a campaign using the “goblin group”) This list is intended to be useful for players who want to select specific antagonists and the like:

Orcs
Ogres
Gnolls
Trolls (a special case not in either group, but expect to see them)
Giants of several (but not all) varieties

The gnolls primarily live in nomadic tribes in the western plains, while the orcs are, for the most part, east of the River Magnus. This is not to be taken to mean that either species can’t cross into the other territory, however.

Of course, none of this is to be taken to indicate that there can’t be additional races that are less common, or at a greater distance from the civilized region.
